A recent news story has suggested that Ankeny Schools are maintaining a database that records what kids buy for lunch and then checks their food against national nutrition guidelines.  Unfortunately, this story has combined several loosely related topics, giving the false impression of some form of “nutrition tracking system.”   Ankeny Schools are not tracking the nutritional properties of individual students’ meals.  In fact, little has changed from previous years, other than one element of the checkout process.  As parents and members of the community, we want to ensure you have factual information.   Read more about this story here...

The district nutritional program is implementing use of personal four-digit PIN numbers for students in grades K-5.  The PIN numbers will make serving lines more efficient and allow more time for students to focus on their lunch selections through our offer vs. serve program and daily salad bar. This will in turn accommodate increased meal choices and the relocation of our point-of-sale machine.

As many parents in the district are aware, approximately 14% of our elementary classrooms have grown to over 27 students.  Board Policy 501.33 states that in cases such as this, class size may reach 29 with special accommodations as determined by administration.
